 NOT JUST ANOTHER CHARITY DINNER!!

That was the opinion of over 350 people who attended and participated in the recent Stellar Trust Roast of Paul Holmes, well known New Zealand broadcaster.

The Stellar Trust, recently formed by the Rotary Club of Auckland East has as its objectives the funding of education and training programmes and creating awareness of the Trusts RISE ABOVE P campaign.

With New Zealand now accounting for the highest per capita use of P in the world, the country has an unenviable record for the world’s worst ever addictive drug.

The dinner was the inaugural event of the Trust and with Paul Holmes as the central figure the opportunities to razz him were well and truly taken by personalities including Tim Shadbolt, Gary McCormick, Tom Scott and Ginette McDonald, ably led by Roastmaster Jim Hopkins. After readily accepting the good natured jibes from his peers, Holmes’s message re the scourge of methamphetamine struck a serious and alarming chord, and he had the audience in stunned silence as family issues were revealed.

The attendance of the Minister of Justice, Simon Power, reflected the Governments concern re the spread of “P” or “ICE” as it is also known and the Rotarians of Auckland East Club believe that the need to marshal all available forces to combat the epidemic of “P” is now.

Additional funds were generated during the night by both live and silent auctions and the event raised an estimated $65000—for the programme, a great start for the Stellar Trust towards its ambitious goals.

CHARITIES   WIN, WIN, WIN, IN HOME AUCTION

A relocatable home, built recently by a team from G.J.Gardner homes, was successfully auctioned recently. in Stonefields, St John’s, at an auction run by Ray White, Ltd.

The inspiration for the project came from a member of the Rotary Club of Auckland East who quickly establishes a small committee to plan the activity.

The support of a number of tradesmen and associated companies was essential to a successful build and companies including Landco, Placemakers (Albany) Plumbing World and Ultra Kitchens all contributed to the project.

The three bedroom home, now ready to be moved to a permanent site in Auckand contained carpeting in bedrooms and hallway,a dining table and chairs, beds and bedroom furniture ,refrigerator, washing machine ,stove and microwave .

As the auctioneer described it, “a plug in, live in home”and the $105000---selling price represented very good value in the current environment.

Beneficiaries of the auction are all worthy charities, and are The Motor Neurone Disease Association, The Life Education Trust and the Leukaemia and Blood Foundation.

None of these organisations receive government funding and the Rotary Club of Auckland East took this into account when identifying possible charities.

The club wishes to thank all those who supported the house building project and contributed to the success of the event.

IT JUST GETS BETTER & BETTER----THE AUCKLAND SEAFOOD FESTIVAL 2009!

That’s the conclusion after the Auckland Seafood Festival which recently took place in Auckland’s Viaduct Basin.
Originally conceived as an oyster festival by  a member of the Rotary Club of Auckland East, this event is now firmly established on the “Must Do “Auckland Anniversary weekend calendar.

Now in its third year, the Festival ran for  three days during which visitors were able to experience a wide range of New Zealand Seafood, taste wine from top New Zealand vineyards and enjoy family entertainment.
The Blessing of The Fleet on the Saturday, involved large number of commercial fishing vessels which would normally have been at sea .The purpose of this activity was to pay tribute to those of their peer group lost at sea  as well as be blessed for an abundant catch.

The entertainment at the Festival was extensive, with the Greasy Pole contest, (required fishers to retrieve a  flag on the end of a pole suspended over the wharf), a great musical line up of bands , a radio competition stage where activities included the Rotary Prize Wheel, oyster eating competitions, Tug O War, fish filleting and many other fun shows.

The VIP lounge was well used by those requiring additional comfort and exclusive service, and was situated within two hundred metres of many super yachts, in Auckland for the international racing involving many Americas Cup syndicates.
Over seventeen thousand visitors attended the Festival, staffed primarily by Rotarians, Rotaractors friends/family associated with The Rotary Club of Auckland East.

President Rae Ah Chee was ecstatic about the the event format and crowd numbers as profits from the Auckland Seafood Festival will assist his club with its Anti Drug campaign “RISE ABOVE P.”
The newly formed Stellar  Trust ,with well known Advisory Board members, will distribute funds to appropriate organisations and programmes with the objective of providing education, training programmes and creating awareness of ten “RISE  ABOVE  P”,campaign.
Sanford, the major New Zealand fishing company, partnered with Rotary to organise the event, and 2010 planning has already commenced.
